US election consequential for APAC outlook

In the US, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and the Republican rival Donald Trump clashed on the debate stage in Philadelphia last week, with sharp exchanges over the economy, immigration, fracking, abortion, and foreign policy. Neither candidate was particularly substantive on policy, with both sidestepping the moderator's questions to focus on their opponent's perceived weaknesses.

Tariffs, tech curbs, and China policy also featured in the early minutes of the debate. Vice President Harris claimed Trump “sold us out” to China by allowing advanced chip sales, and suggested Trump was soft on Chinese President Xi Jinping. Former President Trump hit back by reiterating plans to impose a 100% import tariff on Chinese electric vehicles built in Mexico, in an appeal to the auto production industry in key swing states.
